Ce catalogue a été réalisé à l'occasion de l'exposition du même titre au MAK (Musée royal et impérial autrichien de l’art et de l’industrie) à Vienne entre le 21 avril et le 3 octobre 2021. Créée en 1903, la Wiener Werkstätte (ou Wiener Werkstaette, « Atelier viennois ») est une association d'artistes et d'artisans dont le but fut de produire en toute indépendance des objets décoratifs, des bâtiments, du textile, des spectacles. Issu de la Sécession viennoise, cet atelier d'arts appliqués réunissait des architectes, des artistes et des designers, dont l’engagement premier consistait à mettre l’esthétique de la modernité à la portée de chacun, en conciliant l’artisanat et les arts majeurs (selon le site : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiener_Werkst%C3%A4tte).The oeuvre of the artists of the Wiener Werkstätte is known worldwide; however, to date, only scant interest has been afforded the women artists. The ceramicists G. Baudisch, S.Singer, and V. Wieselthier are well known; Mathilde Flögl, Hilda Jesser, Maria Likarz, and Felice Rix at least evoke some association, but only experts are familiar with Martha Alber, Rose Krenn, and Margarete Reingold.As part of research carried out at the MAK, approx. 180 women artists have been identified whose participation in the development of Viennese arts and crafts is presented in this exhibition for the first time.
