The Hugo, a family of artists

Presentation

This unique House-Museum is truly a family home. The collections feature important testimonies of Victor Hugo’s creativity, passed down through no less than six generations.

The
publication of a book on Hauteville House by Marie and Jean-Baptiste Hugo
provides an opportunity to celebrate the Hugo family, a family of artists. The
museum will dedicate all of its space to this exhibition—and as an exception
will charge an entrance fee—in order to present works, often unknown, by the
different members of the family line: Victor Hugo, of course, with his drawings
and decors, his genius in an intimate context, particularly with an exceptional
collection of Memoirs; those of Mrs. Hugo and her sister-in-law, Julie Duvidal
de Montferrier (a student of Baron Gérard), Abel Hugo’s wife; the childhood
drawings of François-Victor; Charles’ photographs and illuminations; the
astonishing engravings of nephew Léopold, the peculiar mathematician and artist
and a student of his mother, Julie Duvidal; the works of Georges Hugo, the
famous grandson from L’Art d’être
grand-père
(“The Art of Being a Grandfather”), who was a talented painter;
the works of his son, Jean Hugo, a key figure of the Belle Epoque. Marie and
Jean-Baptiste, Jean’s children, share their vision of Hauteville House, the
house of exile that the artist adapted for his family… The exhibition will also
pay special tribute to daughter Adèle, the musician whose compositions are to
be heard for the first time in public.
