Antoinette Sasse

rebel, resistance fighter and philanthropist

Presentation

Antoinette Sasse (1897-1986) was undeniably non-conformist. She rebelled in her private life, divorcing Raymond Sachs in 1933. She was the perfect example of the flapper of the Roaring Twenties: athletic and image-conscious, she skied, swam, and drove a car.

She was elegant, wearing clothing from the great designers –Jeanne Lanvin, Lucien Lelong, and Maggy Rouff. Her address book was brimming with contacts—politicians, diplomats, bankers, aircraft manufacturers as well as artists—giving her free rein of chic Paris. Asserting herself as a Fauvism painter, friend of Léger, Soutine and Van Dongen, Antoinette had exhibitions in several salons. As a savvy businesswoman, she increased the fortune she had inherited and maintained an extraordinary lifestyle. She was a member of the Resistance from the summer of 1940 and became a valuable assistant to Jean Moulin, who had been dismissed from his position as a prefect and had moved to the South of France in Saint-Andiol, where he worked for the Resistance. In addition, Antoinette worked for the Gilbert network in 1942, which was run by her brother-in-law, Colonel Groussard. After the war, she put her determination to good use in a quest for the truth about Jean Moulin’s arrest until justice was done. Her fight for the great resistance fighter’s memory led her to bequeath her entire fortune to the city of Paris to create the Jean Moulin Museum, inaugurated in 1994.
